How to Hang and Care for an Original Painting

Choose the right wall. Original paintings on canvas prefer stable conditions — avoid hanging directly above a heat source, fireplace, or air conditioning vent. Temperature swings and drafts cause the canvas to expand and contract over time, which can stress the paint surface. An interior wall is usually the safest choice.

Light matters more than most people think. Direct sunlight is the fastest way to fade pigment — even high-quality artist paints are not immune to UV over decades. Position the painting out of direct sun, or use UV-filtering glazing if the work is framed behind glass. Track lighting and picture lights are fine; just keep the bulb a reasonable distance from the surface so heat does not accumulate.

Hang it at eye level. The standard gallery rule is 57 inches from the floor to the center of the painting. This is the average human eye level and it works in almost every room. If you are hanging above a sofa or console, leave 6 to 8 inches of space between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.

Use the right hardware. A canvas painting has real weight. Use a proper picture hook rated for the weight of the piece, or a French cleat for larger works. Adhesive strips are not reliable for anything over a kilogram. If the wall is plaster or masonry, use an appropriate anchor — a falling painting damages both the work and the wall.

Dusting and cleaning. For an unframed or unvarnished canvas, use a clean, dry, very soft brush — a wide makeup brush or a dedicated painting brush works well. Brush gently from top to bottom. Do not use water, cleaning sprays, or anything damp on the paint surface. If the painting has a varnish layer, a barely-damp cloth on the varnish is acceptable, but when in doubt, do nothing. A conservator can do a proper cleaning if needed.

Storage, if it comes to that. If you ever need to store the painting, keep it vertical (never flat with weight on top), away from moisture, and wrapped loosely in acid-free tissue or a clean cotton sheet. Bubble wrap directly against paint is not recommended — the texture can transfer over time. Climate-controlled storage is ideal for anything long-term.
