Ke Chen

Water runs through almost everything I paint. Not as subject, but as feeling — the way it moves without forcing, finds its way around whatever stands in its path, and carries everything it touches forward. I work with flowing color the same way. I begin, and the painting moves.

The work is grounded in a question I keep coming back to: why is it that the people most committed to truth, most capable of genuine change, are so often the ones most harshly punished for it? I don't have an answer. But I believe the only honest response is to keep looking — to resist the pressure to simplify, to stay willing to revise what I thought I knew. Each canvas is an act of that willingness. It asks the same of the person who lives with it.

I make work because I want to put love and hope into the world without sentimentality — without asking anything in return except that you stay open. If a painting of mine finds its way into your home, I hope it gives you something to return to. Something quiet that still, occasionally, surprises you.
